The Village of Marine, located in Madison County, was settled by a sea captain and some sailor friends. Upon arriving on the Illinois prairie, these settlers saw the prairie grasses blowing in the wind, and it reminded them of waves of the sea; and thus, they called the area Marine.  Therefore, when the local Girl Scout troop requested to use an area of land at the Heritage Park and Lake for their Prairie Project, it was only fitting that the troop should be allowed to plant prairie grasses and wild flowers.

Our small community, incorporated in 1888 and comprised of 960 citizens, is surrounded by farmland. Although rural by nature, Marine is conveniently located north of Interstate 70 which allows residents ready access to the St. Louis Metropolitan area.

Our Village boasts two parks—the Village Park and the Heritage Park and Lake. The Heritage Park is the trailhead for the Madison County Transit Bikeway.  Both parks include picnic pavilions and playgrounds.  Also the Marine Volunteer Fire Department owns and maintains a park complete with ball diamonds that are used by the youth of the Village.

A tank that sits in the Village Park commemorates those brave individuals who have served our country. A Gazebo, constructed in 1912, is the focal point of the Village Park. In the past, the Gazebo has been used for many band concerts and weddings.  South of the park is a small library that was the home of the American Women’s League in the early 1900s. This building is on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Each summer, the last weekend in June, the Marine Lion’s Club hosts the annual Homecoming and Parade which draws people from surrounding communities.

To celebrate the Christmas season, the Village Park is brightly decorated with thousands of lights, which are lighted from Thanksgiving until New Years.  The Village sponsors “Christmas in the Park” with a bonfire, refreshments, and a visit from Santa, who has treats for the children.

Marine is part of the Triad Community Unit School District No. 2.  Students attend Triad High School, Triad Middle School, or Marine Elementary School. Marine Elementary School is a K through 5 building in the Triad School District with state of the art technology.
